  • About Food Science - (Junior Food Innovators)

Step into the world of Food Science and discover the exciting ways cooking connects to chemistry, nutrition, and creativity! This project-based program is designed to spark curiosity, build confidence, and encourage healthy habits through hands-on food-centered learning. Students will explore how ingredients transform through heat and reactions, how balanced meals fuel their bodies, and how recipes can be remixed with imagination.

Through experiments, kitchen chemistry, and nutrition challenges, students will gain practical skills while making connections between science and everyday eating. From designing colorful food plates to decoding sugar labels and exploring hydration, they will learn how to make smart choices about what they eat.

As budding chefs and innovators, students will put their creativity to the test by developing recipes, practicing real-world cooking skills, and even designing their own restaurant and menu. Join us in Food Science to mix learning with fun, and watch curiosity, confidence, and collaboration grow—one tasty challenge at a time.

  • Focus Areas

    Culinary Science & Kitchen Chemistry:
Experiment with heat, reactions, and food properties as students explore how science changes what we eat—and how we cook it!

    Nutrition, Wellness & Smart Eating:
Build awareness of food groups, hydration, and balance while designing custom meals, decoding sugar labels, and building colorful food plates.

    Culinary Creativity & Entrepreneurship:
Practice real-world cooking skills, remix traditional recipes, and bring big ideas to life by designing your own restaurant and menu!

  • The Science of Food Transformations

Students will explore the science behind food transformations (e.g., emulsification, fermentation)

  • Smart Nutrition and Balanced Eating

Students will evaluate food choices using nutrition labels, hydration needs, and meal balance.

  • Creative Recipes and Food Innovation

Students will remix traditional recipes and create branded food products to share.

Sample Lessons

In Food Science, students explore the many ways food connects to science, health, and creativity. They will discover how food fuels the body, experiment with heating and cooling, and compare different cooking methods to see how flavor and nutrition change. Students will also trace the farm-to-fork journey, debate tricky food classifications, and bring learning to life with projects like comics, charts, heat wheels, and timelines. Each lesson blends curiosity with hands-on exploration, turning everyday foods into exciting opportunities for discovery.

Collapsible content

Power Up with Food

Students will discover how food gives us the energy to move, think, and grow. They will create a comic strip that shows how nutrition powers the body in action.

Kitchen Transformations

From melting butter to freezing juice, students will explore how heat and cold change food states. They will diagram a food phase chart to capture these exciting changes.

Cooking Method Match-Up

Students will compare baking, boiling, frying, and steaming to see how each method changes flavor and nutrition. They will build a colorful cooking heat wheel to showcase their findings.

Farm-to-Fork Journey

By tracing how food travels from farms to our plates, students will explore food systems in action. They will create a farm-to-fork timeline that makes the journey come alive.

Fruit vs. Veggie Challenge

Students will investigate the tricky science of classifying fruits and vegetables. Using clay models, they will sort and shape foods while debating which category they belong to.

Course Format

Our Food Science curriculum is designed to blend engaging afterschool learning with the proven 5E instructional model—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate.

Each phase encourages students to connect food, nutrition, and science in meaningful ways while building curiosity, creativity, and real-world problem-solving skills.

We begin with the Engage Phase, sparking interest through fun prompts like “What gives food its power?” or “Is a tomato really a fruit?” that draw students into the science of everyday meals.

In the Explore Phase, students investigate through hands-on activities such as experimenting with solid, liquid, and melted snacks, comparing heating and cooling methods, and tracing how food travels from farm to fork.

The Explain Phase introduces key concepts in chemistry, nutrition, and biology, helping students see how food fuels the body, transforms with temperature, and supports health.

The Elaborate Phase brings learning to life with creative projects like superhero trading cards that showcase powerful foods, a “Frosty Banana” comic to illustrate cooling, and farm-to-table maps that connect science to food systems.

The journey concludes in the Evaluate Phase, where students reflect on their discoveries, classify tricky foods with clay models, and share how food connects to wellness, creativity, and community.

This structured yet flexible approach ensures every student not only learns the science of food but also gains confidence, collaboration skills, and a lifelong appreciation for how cooking connects to health and culture.
