On October 23rd, the NEW Academy of Canoga Park campus buzzed with energy as students, families, and community partners came together for a night of play, creativity, and connection. Kids rotated through sports, arts, and robotics stations, diving into challenges, exploring new ideas, and letting their curiosity lead the way. Families bonded over bites from a local food truck, snapped photos, and shared in the joy of the evening. When the festivities wound down, every child left with school supplies and a glow bracelet—a small token celebrating the spark they bring to everything they do.

This unforgettable event was part of Lights On Afterschool, a nationwide celebration organized by the Afterschool Alliance, to highlight the impact of after-school programs. Each year, it shines a spotlight on how expanded learning opportunities help students grow academically, socially, and emotionally while supporting families. At BAM!, we’re proud to join this movement by showcasing what’s possible when curiosity, creativity, and connection take center stage after the bell rings.

Why These Programs Matter
-
More than 10 million children nationwide participate in after-school programs, and another 19.4 million would if one were available to them.
This gap shows how essential expanded learning opportunities are, and how much unmet demand remains. Families across the country are actively seeking programs that not only provide safe supervision but also nurture creativity, confidence, and social skills. When schools and community partners invest in after-school opportunities, they’re fueling the kind of change that ripples outward, lifting families, energizing communities, and lighting the path to brighter futures.
-
For every child in an after-school program, there are three more waiting to get in.
The need for quality after-school programming far exceeds supply, especially in communities where families face barriers related to cost, transportation, or availability. By expanding access, we can help close the opportunity gap, ensuring every child has the chance to explore new interests, connect with peers, and discover their potential beyond the school day.
-
Each year, more than 8,000 Lights On Afterschool events unite over 1 million Americans in celebration.
This nationwide movement underscores the collective belief that learning doesn’t stop when the final bell rings. From rural towns to urban centers, families, educators, and policymakers are coming together to spotlight the positive outcomes after-school programs create.
