Summer has a way of reminding us what happens when kids have the space, support, and opportunities to explore what excites them.
Without the structure and pressures of the traditional school year, kids often feel freer to ask questions, try new things, make new friends, and discover interests they may not have known they had. Whether they are building a robot, creating art, designing a project, learning a new skill, or simply working together through a challenge, summer reveals something important: kids thrive when learning feels engaging, hands-on, and meaningful.
At Brains & Motion, our summer camps give us a front-row seat to these moments every year. We see confidence grow, friendships blossom, and curiosity come alive when kids are encouraged to explore.
As we head into a new school year, these are six lessons from summer that families can continue carrying forward.

1. Families Are Looking for More Screen-Free Opportunities
One of the biggest themes we heard from families this summer was simple: they want more opportunities for kids to unplug.
Between schoolwork, tablets, phones, gaming, and entertainment, many families are looking for ways to create more balance throughout the year.
That’s one reason our STEM Without Screens™ experiences became such a highlight of summer. Kids built, experimented, designed, and solved problems using physical materials, teamwork, creativity, and imagination rather than spending more time in front of a device.
Families are not looking to eliminate technology completely. They are looking for balance.
Providing opportunities for hands-on, screen-free learning can help kids develop important STEM skills while also encouraging creativity, communication, social connection, and confidence.

2. Engagement Comes From Hands-On Experiences
Summer reminds us that kids are naturally curious. They want to build, create, experiment, move, and solve problems.
A camper building a Strawbees structure, engineering a Rube Goldberg® machine, coding their first game, or tackling a LEGO® robotics challenge is doing far more than learning one new skill. They are practicing creativity, critical thinking, perseverance, and collaboration.
Hands-on experiences make learning feel exciting and memorable.
As the school year begins, families can continue encouraging this type of learning through enrichment opportunities, after-school activities, creative projects at home, and experiences that allow kids to explore their interests in new ways.

3. Confidence Grows When Kids Are Given Opportunities to Try
One of the most rewarding parts of summer is watching kids surprise themselves.
A child who has never tried coding creates their first game. A camper who felt shy on the first day becomes a leader by the end of the week. A student discovers a love of engineering, art, or movement they never expected.
These moments happen because kids are given supportive environments where they can take risks, make mistakes, and keep trying.
Confidence does not always come from getting everything right. Often, it comes from realizing, "I can do hard things."
Creating opportunities throughout the school year for kids to try new activities can have a lasting impact on self-esteem, resilience, and independence.

4. Social Learning Matters
Some of the most memorable summer moments happen between activities.
Kids collaborate on projects, encourage teammates, solve problems together, and build friendships that sometimes last long after camp ends.
These experiences help develop important life skills such as communication, teamwork, empathy, and leadership.
As families prepare for the school year, finding opportunities for kids to connect with peers outside of the classroom can be incredibly valuable, especially in a world where so much interaction happens through screens.
Enrichment activities and after-school programs can help kids continue building meaningful friendships and social confidence all year long.

5. Learning Can Be Fun and Still Be Meaningful
Summer reminds us that learning does not have to feel like a chore.
When kids are excited about what they are doing, they naturally become more engaged. They ask more questions, stay focused longer, and become active participants in the learning process.
Fun and learning are not opposites.
The most meaningful experiences combine excitement with intentional skill-building, helping kids develop confidence, creativity, problem-solving abilities, and curiosity.
Whether it is STEM, arts, movement, coding, engineering, or creative challenges, engaging experiences help kids see learning as something they genuinely enjoy.

6. Every Child Deserves Opportunities to Discover New Passions
Every child has unique interests, talents, and ways of learning.
Summer gives kids the freedom to explore those interests in a low-pressure environment, whether they are passionate about robotics, art, science, building, sports, or simply trying something completely new.
The school year can become busy with academics, homework, and activities, but it is still important to make space for exploration.
You never know what passion your child might discover next.
Providing opportunities to explore new interests can help kids build confidence, discover strengths, and develop skills that support them both inside and outside the classroom.

Bringing the Best of Summer Into the School Year
Summer may only last a few months, but the lessons it teaches us can last all year.
Kids learn best when they feel supported, engaged, and excited to participate. They grow when they have opportunities to create, collaborate, move, explore, and challenge themselves.
This summer also reinforced something we are hearing from more families than ever before: parents are looking for opportunities that help kids unplug, connect with others, and experience hands-on learning.
That’s why STEM Without Screens™ continues to resonate so strongly. Families increasingly want balanced experiences that combine the benefits of STEM education with creativity, movement, and real-world exploration.
At BAM!, we believe the excitement and curiosity that emerge during summer should not end when summer does. Through hands-on STEM, arts, movement, and enrichment experiences, we help kids continue discovering new passions all year long.

Keep the Momentum Going This School Year
Want your child to continue experiencing the confidence, friendships, and hands-on learning they loved this summer?
Check to see if Brains & Motion programs are offered at your child's school or in your community. If programs are not currently available, we'd love to hear from you.
Parents play an important role in helping bring enriching opportunities to more students, and many of our school partnerships begin with a family recommendation.
