Lessons From Summer We’re Bringing to the New School Year

Summer has a way of reminding us what happens when kids have the space, support, and opportunities to explore what excites them.

Without the structure and pressures of the traditional school year, campers have the freedom to ask questions, try new things, collaborate with friends, and discover interests they may not have known they had. Whether they are building a robot, creating a game, designing a project, learning a new skill, or simply working together through a challenge, summer reveals something important: kids thrive when learning feels engaging, hands-on, and meaningful.

At Brains & Motion, our summer camps give us a front-row seat to these moments every year. We see the confidence kids build, the friendships they form, and the curiosity that grows when they are encouraged to explore.

As we head into a new school year, we’re bringing those lessons with us. Here are six things summer continues to teach us about creating impactful learning experiences for students all year long.

1. Families Are Looking for More Screen-Free Opportunities

One of the biggest themes we heard from families this summer was simple: they want kids to have opportunities to unplug.

After a school year that increasingly relies on technology and a world where screens are everywhere, parents are actively seeking experiences that encourage creativity, collaboration, movement, and hands-on discovery.

Our STEM Without Screens™ experiences became a major highlight of summer because they showed families that STEM learning does not need to happen behind a device. Students built, experimented, designed, and solved problems using physical materials, teamwork, and imagination.

For school leaders, this presents an important opportunity.

Families are not asking schools to eliminate technology. They are asking for balance.

By incorporating more hands-on, screen-free enrichment opportunities throughout the school year, schools can help students develop critical STEM skills while also supporting creativity, communication, social connection, and engagement.

As parents continue looking for meaningful alternatives to recreational screen time, STEM Without Screens™ offers a powerful way for schools to meet that need while delivering high-quality, future-ready learning experiences.

2. Engagement Comes From Hands-On Experiences

Kids are naturally curious. They want to build, create, experiment, move, and solve problems. When students can actively participate in their learning, they become more invested in the experience.

Summer STEAM programs give kids the opportunity to learn by doing. A camper designing a Strawbees structure, building a Rube Goldberg® machine, coding their first game in Scratch, or working through a LEGO® robotics challenge is doing far more than developing just one new skill. They are practicing creativity, problem-solving, communication, and perseverance.

This same approach carries into the school year. Enrichment experiences that complement classroom learning can help students stay engaged by providing opportunities to explore concepts in new and exciting ways.

At BAM!, our Before & After-School Programs and Supplemental Enrichment Courses are designed around hands-on learning that encourages students to participate, collaborate, and create.

3. Confidence Grows When Kids Are Given Opportunities to Try

One of the most rewarding parts of summer is watching kids surprise themselves.

A child who has never played soccer before scores their first goal. A camper who was hesitant on the first day leads a team coding challenge by the end of the week. A student discovers a new passion for drawing that they never expected.

These moments happen because kids are given a supportive environment where they can take risks, make mistakes, and keep trying.

During the school year, creating spaces where students can explore new interests outside of traditional academics can have a lasting impact on confidence and self-belief. Enrichment programs give students another opportunity to shine, especially when they discover strengths that may not always appear during the school day.

4. Social Learning Matters

Some of the most memorable summer moments happen between activities: the teamwork, conversations, and friendships built throughout the day.

Whether students are collaborating on a STEM challenge, creating art together, or participating in group games, they are constantly developing important social and durable skills. They learn how to communicate, compromise, encourage others, and work toward a shared goal.

These skills are essential inside and outside the classroom.

As schools continue focusing on whole-child development, enrichment programs provide valuable opportunities for students to build relationships and practice collaboration in a positive, structured environment.

5. Learning Can Be Fun and Still Be Meaningful

Summer reminds us that learning does not have to feel like a chore.

When students are excited about what they’re doing, they naturally become more engaged. They ask more questions, stay focused longer, and take greater ownership of their experience.

That does not mean learning should be without purpose. The most impactful enrichment experiences combine fun with intentional skill-building, helping students develop knowledge while also building confidence, creativity, and curiosity.

From STEM and arts to movement and hands-on challenges, engaging programs help students see learning as something they can enjoy being part of.

6. Every Student Deserves Opportunities to Discover Their Interests

Every student brings unique interests, talents, and ways of learning into a program.

Summer gives kids the chance to explore those interests in a low-pressure environment, whether they are passionate about technology, sports, puzzles, art, or trying new activities

The school year brings many academic and personal demands, making it even more important for students to have access to meaningful enrichment opportunities.

By offering a variety of engaging programs, schools can help more students find their place, discover new passions, and build skills that support them beyond the classroom.

Bringing the Best of Summer Into the School Year

Summer may only last a few months, but the lessons it teaches us last all year.

Kids learn best when they feel supported, engaged, and excited to participate. They grow when they have opportunities to explore, create, collaborate, and challenge themselves.

This summer also reinforced something we are hearing more frequently from families: they want more opportunities for kids to unplug, connect with others, and experience hands-on learning.

That is why programs like STEM Without Screens™ continue to resonate so strongly. Families are increasingly looking for balanced learning experiences that combine the benefits of STEM education with creativity, movement, and real-world exploration.

At BAM!, we believe the excitement and curiosity that emerge during summer should not end when the school year begins. Through hands-on STEM, arts, movement, and enrichment experiences, we partner with schools to bring that same energy into before-school, after-school, and supplemental programs all year long.

Together, we can create opportunities where every student has the chance to discover something new, build confidence, reduce screen dependence, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
