With a balance of planned activities and games, an emphasis on collaborative fun, and mentorship from enthusiastic, skilled instructors, our Guided Recess experiences turn challenges into meaningful moments kids look forward to daily!
With our hybrid approach, guided activities flow naturally into open ended fun. We mix games with opportunities for kids to choose their favorite activities, and set up stations with sports, arts, and nature exploration, allowing kids to rotate as they see fit. This empowers students and supports their autonomy, decision-making, and character development—crucial skills that will benefit them throughout school, college, careers, and life.

The exceptional team of educators, mentors, and coaches at Brains & Motion is guided by Bart Epstein who served for many years as a professor at the University of Virginia School of Education, ran a U.S. Department of Defense tutoring program for military families, and founded the nonprofit EdTech Evidence Exchange. In his free time, Bart has served as a pilot for Angel Flight and as a civilian test pilot for NASA. He’s held key leadership roles on the boards of ISTE and ASCD. For fifteen years he’s run a nonprofit that purchases more than $1 million of clothing and warm blankets for over 70 homeless shelters each year.
